Titanium & Alloys

Aurico Alloys LLP supplies titanium and titanium alloys from Mumbai in sheet, plate, round bar, foil and powder. Held in stock or arranged with the manufacturer, depending on grade and quantity.

Titanium divides into commercially pure grades and alloyed grades, and the two are bought for different reasons. The CP grades — 1 through 4 — are essentially the same metal with progressively more oxygen, which raises strength and lowers ductility as the number goes up. They are chosen for corrosion resistance and formability, not for strength.

The alloyed grades trade some of that formability for a strength-to-weight ratio no steel matches. Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, accounts for most titanium used anywhere. Grade 23 is the same alloy with the interstitials held low for fracture toughness and implant use. A third group, the palladium-bearing grades, exists purely to survive reducing acids that would attack CP titanium.

Grades Supplied

Titanium grades supplied
Grade UNS Type Chosen for
Grade 1 R50250 Commercially pure The softest and most formable; deep drawing and lining
Grade 2 R50400 Commercially pure The workhorse CP grade; chemical, marine and heat exchange
Grade 3 R50550 Commercially pure Higher strength than Grade 2, still readily formed
Grade 4 R50700 Commercially pure The strongest CP grade
Grade 5 R56400 Ti-6Al-4V The most used titanium alloy; aerospace and high-load parts
Grade 6 R54520 Ti-5Al-2.5Sn Weldable, stable at elevated temperature and cryogenic service
Grade 7 R52400 CP with palladium Grade 2 chemistry with palladium for reducing acids
Grade 9 R56320 Ti-3Al-2.5V Between CP and Grade 5; tubing and hydraulic lines
Grade 11 R52250 CP with palladium Grade 1 chemistry with palladium added
Grade 12 R53400 Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni Crevice corrosion resistance in hot brines
Grade 16 R52402 CP with palladium As Grade 7 at a lower palladium content
Grade 23 R56407 Ti-6Al-4V ELI Extra low interstitial; fracture toughness and implants
Ti-6-2-4-2 R54620 Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo Creep strength to 425 °C; compressor blades, discs and impellers
Ti-6-6-2 R56620 Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn Higher strength than Ti-6Al-4V; airframe and ordnance
Ti-5-2-4-4 R58650 Ti-5Al-2Sn-2Zr-4Cr-4Mo (Ti-17) Deep-hardening; fan and compressor discs and large forgings
Ti-8-1-1 R54810 Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V Lowest density and high stiffness; airframe and jet-engine parts
Ti-6Al-7Nb R56700 Ti-6Al-7Nb surgical Vanadium-free implant alloy; hip stems, plates and screws

Designations are as stated on each grade page. Confirm the specification against the mill certificate for the batch supplied.

Where These Alloys Are Used

  • Chemical processing — heat exchangers, vessels and piping in chloride service
  • Marine and offshore — seawater systems, risers and heat exchange
  • Medical — implants and instruments, in Grade 2 and Grade 23
  • Aerospace — airframe and engine components, mostly Grade 5
  • Desalination — plate and tubular heat exchangers
  • Additive manufacturing — gas and plasma atomised powder in Grades 2, 5 and 23

Certification and Cutting

Material is supplied against EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, with chemical composition and mechanical properties for the batch. Cutting to size is done in house.
