Mu-Metal is a soft magnetic nickel-iron alloy with exceptionally high permeability and very low coercivity. It does not block a magnetic field so much as offer it an easier path, drawing flux around whatever sits inside the shield - which is why it is the standard material wherever low-frequency magnetic interference has to be kept out of sensitive instrumentation.

Chemical Composition
Nominally 80% nickel with 4.2 to 5.0% molybdenum and the balance iron, with carbon, silicon and manganese held low. The high nickel content is what produces the permeability; molybdenum raises electrical resistivity and improves the response to annealing.
Magnetic and Physical Properties
Initial relative permeability is typically above 20,000 and maximum relative permeability can exceed 200,000 after a full hydrogen anneal, with coercivity below 4 A/m and saturation induction around 0.75 tesla. Density is 8.7 g/cm3. Shielding effectiveness depends heavily on that final anneal: forming, cutting or drilling after annealing introduces stress that lowers permeability, so parts should be finished first and annealed last.
