Monel is nickel-copper, roughly two parts nickel to one part copper, and it occupies a narrow but genuinely useful niche: it is one of the few alloys that resists both seawater and hydrofluoric acid, and it does not suffer the chloride stress corrosion cracking that limits austenitic stainless steel.
The family is small and the choice is straightforward. Monel 400 is the base alloy and covers most duty. Monel 405 is the same chemistry with sulphur added to break up swarf, so it is chosen when the part is screw-machined in quantity. Monel K-500 adds aluminium and titanium so it can be age-hardened, roughly tripling the yield strength while keeping the corrosion behaviour of 400.

Chemical Composition
Monel 400 is nominally 63% minimum nickel with 28-34% copper and up to 2.5% iron. Monel K-500 adds 2.3-3.15% aluminium and 0.35-0.85% titanium so it can be precipitation hardened.
Mechanical and Physical Properties
Monel 400 delivers about 550 MPa tensile strength annealed; K-500 reaches 1100 MPa in the aged condition while keeping the same corrosion behaviour. Both stay ductile down to cryogenic temperatures.
