Tube is where 600’s high nickel earns its keep in heat transfer: caustic evaporators and chlorination heaters where a stainless tube would crack, and small-bore sheaths that have to survive a furnace atmosphere around a thermocouple or a heating element. It was once the standard steam-generator tube in pressurised-water reactors; the intergranular cracking it suffered in high-temperature primary water is the reason Inconel 690 now fills that role.

Mechanical and Physical Properties
Tube is supplied annealed. Annealed 600 runs roughly 550–690 MPa tensile with yield near 240 MPa and elongation above 35%, which is what lets it be bent and rolled into a tubesheet without cracking, and it stays serviceable in continuous duty to roughly 1090°C – the property that puts a 600 sheath inside a furnace.
Industry Applications
Why Inconel 600 tube
Specify 600 tube when the failure you are designing out is chloride or caustic stress-corrosion cracking rather than pitting. The 72% minimum nickel is what resists it, and 14–17% chromium is enough for the oxidising side of a heater or a furnace. It carries no molybdenum, so for chloride pitting look at Inconel 625 tube; and for reactor primary water the answer is 690 tube. Between those limits it is usually the least expensive tube that will do the job.

Testing and Certification
Each length is traceable to its heat on an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate stating chemical analysis and mechanical properties. For heat-exchanger duty we add hydrostatic and ultrasonic testing on request, positive material identification to confirm the nickel content, and intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM G28 where the purchase specification calls for it. Third-party release by Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, SGS or TÜV can be arranged under our ISO 9001:2015 system.
