Duplex Steel Wire: Standards, Properties, and Industrial Performance

Combining ferritic-austenitic microstructure for superior strength and corrosion resistance.

Introduction: Refinery Heat Exchanger Failures

In a South Korean refinery's crude distillation unit, duplex stainless steel (DSS) tubes in overhead exchangers suffered chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (Cl-SCC) at 148°C. MEA hydrochloride salts formed on surfaces, combined with chlorides and low pH, causing transgranular cracks from the outer surface—despite DSS's reputation. Proper duplex steel wire per ASTM A479 and UNS S31803 prevents such issues in chemical processing, oil & gas, and marine sectors.

Specifications & Standards

Duplex wire conforms to ASTM A479, covering UNS S31803/S32205 (2205); A240 covers plate, sheet and strip and A790 covers pipe. DIN EN 1.4462 and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 ensure sour service compliance for oil & gas.

Ferrite 35-65% verified metallographically, hardness ≤320 HV10 per NACE MR0103.
