Why Waspaloy Sheet is Specified
Waspaloy is an age-hardenable nickel-chromium-cobalt superalloy: chromium 18.0–21.0% for oxidation resistance, cobalt 12.0–15.0% and molybdenum 3.5–5.0% in solid solution, and titanium 2.75–3.25% with aluminium 1.20–1.60% forming the gamma-prime that carries the strength. It holds high strength and creep resistance to roughly 870 °C (1,600 °F), which is why it has been a gas turbine material for decades.
In sheet gauges that combination behaves differently from the solid-solution alloys a fabricator is more used to. An Inconel 625 or Hastelloy sheet is bought for what it resists; a Waspaloy sheet is bought for what it still carries at temperature after the aging cycle. That makes the condition the sheet is delivered in as much a part of the order as the thickness, and it is the first thing to state on an enquiry.
Because the alloy is precipitation-hardened, forming and welding are normally done on solution-treated material and the aging cycle follows, so the finished part reaches full strength in its final shape rather than being fought into shape after it is hard. Sheet parts are then usually finish-machined or trimmed only lightly. Where the design calls for heavier sections – discs, spacers, machined rings – the same grade is ordered as Waspaloy plate or as forged bar and billet, which is what AMS 5704, 5706, 5707 and ASTM B637 cover.

Waspaloy has no single set of room-temperature figures, because an age-hardenable alloy has the properties of the condition it is in. Solution-treated sheet is comparatively soft and formable; the same sheet after the aging cycle carries the strength and creep resistance the alloy is specified for. Quoting one number for both would describe neither.
