Incoloy 825, 890, 903, and 909 Foil: High-Performance Nickel Alloys for Demanding Environments

UNS N08825 | ASTM B424 | DIN 2.4858 standards ensure reliability in chemical, oil & gas, and marine applications.

A Critical Failure in Chemical Processing Highlights the Need for Superior Foil Alloys

In a major phosphoric acid plant in Southeast Asia, a routine heat exchanger retrofit turned disastrous. Standard stainless steel foil cladding failed under pitting corrosion after just 18 months, leading to leaks, unplanned shutdowns, and $2.5 million in repairs. Operators traced the issue to inadequate resistance against reducing acids and chloride stress cracking common killers in chemical processing. This incident underscores why procurement heads and OEM fabricators turn to Incoloy 825, 890, 903, and 909 foils, engineered per UNS, ASTM, DIN, and EN standards for unmatched durability.

These nickel-iron-chromium alloys with strategic additions like molybdenum, titanium, and columbium deliver where alternatives falter, minimizing downtime in high-stakes industries.

Equivalent Grades Across Global Standards

Incoloy 825 equivalents include NA 16 (BS), NCF 825 (JIS), and Alloy 825 (common trade name), aligning with DIN 2.4858 for European fabricators. Incoloy 890 matches INCOLOY alloy 20 variants, while 903 and 909 serve as low-expansion alternatives to Invar 36, with UNS N19903/N19909 traceability.

These cross-references aid procurement in matching specs for chemical processing valves or oil & gas seals without reformulation.

Product Forms and Availability

Foil Specifications

Foil available in annealed, soft, half-hard tempers; widths up to 300mm, lengths custom-cut. Thicknesses: 0.01-0.5mm cold-rolled, hot-rolled up to 2mm. Value-added: plasma/laser cutting, edge prep for OEM welding.

Other Forms

  • Sheet/Plate: 0.3-75mm thick (ASTM B424)
  • Strip/Coil: Slit to precision for pharma bellows
  • Complements Titanium Grade 5 UNS R56400 ASTM B265 sheets for hybrid assemblies

Why this grade

Incoloy 825 is not a high-temperature grade at all. It takes the 800 base and adds about 3% molybdenum, 2% copper and titanium stabilisation, producing the wet-corrosion member of the family: sulphuric and phosphoric acid duty, and the resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking that 316L does not have.
