Alloy 602 CA

Alloy 602 CA (UNS N06025, W.Nr. 2.4633, NiCr25FeAlY) offers exceptional oxidation, carburization and creep resistance up to about 1200°C, for radiant tubes, furnace muffles, rotary kilns and superheater components. It is a VDM Metals grade - sold as VDM Alloy 602 CA or Nicrofer 6025 HT - and not an INCONEL alloy, which is why it sits in the nickel alloys family rather than under Inconel.

Surface Condition of 602 CA Sheet and Plate

602 CA sheet and plate is supplied in the solution-annealed condition only, annealed in an atmospheric furnace. Two surface finishes follow from that: scaled, with the furnace oxide left in place, or ground, with the oxide removed mechanically.

Grinding is the only correct way to descale this alloy. Pickling attacks the grain boundaries and leaves intergranular defects, so it is not an option on 602 CA the way it is on many other grades. If you need a bright surface, it has to be ground.

When to specify the scaled finish

The retained oxide layer is an advantage in heavy, very-high-temperature service — oxidising, carburising, or sulphidising conditions in reducing atmospheres. In some applications it does the job of a separate pre-oxidation treatment, removing that step entirely. Among the sheet and plate grades VDM produces, the scaled finish is offered on 602 CA alone.

When not to

Scale must not be welded through. Where weld seams are planned, grind and clean the surface for a minimum of 20 mm on both sides of the joint before welding. If most of the material is going to be welded, the ground finish is usually the more sensible order.

Surface condition guidance reflects the material producer’s published recommendations for this grade. Confirm the finish you need when enquiring — scaled and ground are ordered differently and are not interchangeable once delivered.
