Stainless Steel Powder for Additive Manufacturing
Aurico Alloys LLP supplies 2 stainless steel powder grades for additive manufacturing: 316L (S31603) and 17-4 PH (S17400).
Austenitic and precipitation-hardening stainless powders: one the forgiving workhorse of metal printing, the other for when a printed part has to carry load.
Every grade and cut on this page is supplied: held in stock, or arranged with the manufacturer where a cut is not on the shelf. Tell us the alloy, the size fraction and the quantity and we will confirm availability and lead time.
Stainless Steel Powder Grades
| Grade | UNS | Specification | Size fractions | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 316L | S31603 | ASTM F3184 (PBF) | 5-25 µm · 15-45 µm · 15-53 µm · 45-105 µm · 53-105 µm · 45-150 µm · 53-150 µm | Medical and surgical instruments |
| 17-4 PH | S17400 | ASTM F3301 (PBF post-processing) | 5-25 µm · 15-45 µm · 15-53 µm · 45-105 µm · 53-105 µm · 45-150 µm · 53-150 µm | Tooling |
316L Stainless Steel Powder
The workhorse of metal printing. Forgiving to process, weldable, and cheap enough to use for prototyping before committing to a costlier alloy.
Applications: Medical and surgical instruments, food and pharmaceutical process parts, marine fittings, and heat exchangers.
17-4 PH Stainless Steel Powder
Reaches over 1300 MPa after a simple H900 age, which makes it the default when a printed stainless part has to carry real load.
Applications: Tooling, aerospace brackets, valve and pump components, and moulds.
Should I use 316L or 17-4 PH powder?
Use 316L when corrosion resistance and ductility matter and the part is not highly loaded; it is also the easier of the two to print. Use 17-4 PH when the part needs strength, since a simple H900 age takes it past 1300 MPa. 316L corrodes better, 17-4 PH is far stronger.
