Chemical Composition

Nickel 99.0% minimum, with copper to 0.25%, iron to 0.40%, manganese to 0.35% and silicon to 0.35%. Carbon is the distinguishing element: 0.15% maximum in Nickel 200 and 0.02% maximum in Nickel 201.

Mechanical and Physical Properties

Annealed tensile strength is around 380-450 MPa with elongation of 40% or more. Density is 8.89 g/cm3, melting range 1435-1446 degrees C, with high thermal and electrical conductivity and a Curie temperature of about 360 degrees C. Nickel 201 keeps its ductility in continuous service above 315 degrees C where Nickel 200 would embrittle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are commercially pure nickel. Nickel 201 is the low-carbon version, capped at 0.02% carbon against 0.15% for Nickel 200. That lower carbon prevents embrittlement from graphite precipitation above about 315 degrees C, so Nickel 201 is the grade for sustained elevated-temperature and caustic service.
