Hastelloy® B3
Aurico Alloys LLP supplies Hastelloy® B3 as sheet, plate and round bar, from Mumbai, India, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates.
Hastelloy® B-3 (UNS N10675, W.Nr. 2.4600) is B-2's nickel–molybdenum chemistry with chromium and iron brought into controlled ranges of 1-3% each and carbon cut to 0.01% maximum. Those changes exist to fix B-2's one weakness: loss of ductility after exposure in the intermediate temperature range.
Key Properties
- Molybdenum 27-32%, with chromium 1.0-3.0% and iron 1.0-3.0% specified as ranges rather than ceilings.
- Carbon 0.01% maximum, against 0.02% on B-2.
- Thermal stability is the reason to specify it over B-2 — the hydrochloric acid resistance is the same.
- ASTM B333 for plate, sheet and strip; B335 for rod and bar; B619 / B622 for pipe and tube.
Applications
- Hydrochloric acid plant where welding and thermal history matter
- Acetic acid and organic chloride processes
- Reactors and heat exchangers in reducing acid service
In Haynes’ tests B-3 corrodes at 0.29 mm/y in boiling 20% hydrochloric acid and at 0.05 mm/y or less in boiling sulphuric acid up to 60%, but it has no resistance once oxidising species are present. It is set against the C-type grades in our acid and alkali service guide.
